TMT rod sizes, grades, quality verification, pricing, supplier selection and delivery — the complete guide from Raloyd, trusted by 300+ construction professionals across Lagos.
Every week in Lagos, millions of naira are lost on construction projects because buyers accepted under-gauge rods, signed delivery notes without counting, or chose a supplier based on price alone without understanding what full-gauge means. The structural consequences — weakened columns, compromised slabs, costly rework — are entirely preventable.
This guide was written by Raloyd Trades and Resources Partners Limited, one of Lagos's most trusted iron rod suppliers, to give every buyer — from first-time developers to experienced procurement teams — the knowledge they need to buy correctly, every single time.

TMT stands for Thermo-Mechanically Treated. Unlike older mild steel bars, TMT rods go through a controlled water-quenching process immediately after rolling, while the steel is still at high temperature. This creates a hardened outer layer with a softer, more ductile core — a combination that delivers superior strength, flexibility and bond with concrete.
The result is a bar that carries more load at the same diameter, resists bending under stress, and performs far better in seismic conditions. TMT rods have completely replaced plain mild steel bars as the construction standard across Nigeria because of these properties.
The grade (Fe 415, Fe 500) tells you the minimum yield strength in megapascals. Fe 500 is roughly 20% stronger than Fe 415 at the same diameter. Most structural engineers in Lagos specify Fe 500 for all primary structural members. Always confirm the grade before ordering.
Substituting Fe 415 where Fe 500 was specified is a structural deficiency that may not show immediately — but it is always there, quietly carrying less load than your engineer designed for. Always order the grade your engineer specifies, in writing.
"Can you provide a mill test certificate for this batch?" A legitimate supplier of full-gauge TMT rods can produce lab certificates confirming grade, yield strength and chemical composition. If a supplier cannot produce this on request, that tells you something important about what they are selling.
The size refers to the nominal diameter of the bar in millimetres. Each size has specific structural applications. Your engineer's reinforcement drawing specifies which sizes go where — never substitute without written authorisation from your engineer.
| Size | Weight per 12m Bar | Bars per Ton | Primary Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8mm | 4.74 kg | ≈ 210 | Stirrups, shear links, light ties, distribution bars |
| 10mm | 7.40 kg | ≈ 133 | Slab reinforcement, ring beams, light columns, secondary bars |
| 12mm | 10.66 kg | ≈ 93 | Slabs, medium columns, residential beams — highest volume size in Lagos |
| 16mm | 18.93 kg | ≈ 52 | Column main bars, heavy beams, transfer slabs, commercial structures |
| 20mm | 29.59 kg | ≈ 33 | Heavy columns, raft foundations, large-span structural elements |
| 25mm | 46.25 kg | ≈ 21 | High-rise column cores, bridge decks, heavy civil infrastructure |
If a supplier delivers significantly more bars per ton than the standard figures above, the rods are under-gauge — they weigh less than specification and will carry less load than your engineer designed for. A supplier offering 110 bars of 12mm per ton (standard is 93) is supplying sub-specification steel. Count the bars before you sign.
Ordering the wrong quantity is one of the most expensive procurement mistakes on any Lagos construction site. Too little means emergency buying at peak price. Too much means capital locked in unused stock. The correct calculation takes minutes and protects you completely.
Number of Bars = (Tonnes × 1,000) ÷ Weight per Bar (kg)
Example: How many 16mm bars in 3 tonnes?
= (3 × 1,000) ÷ 18.93 = 158 bars
Tonnes = (Number of Bars × Weight per Bar) ÷ 1,000
Example: Weight of 150 bars of 12mm?
= (150 × 10.66) ÷ 1,000 = 1.60 tonnes
No project uses rods with zero wastage. Cutting, lapping, offcuts and handling losses all reduce usable steel. Lagos quantity surveyors typically add 8–12% for residential and up to 15% for complex commercial work. If your engineer gave you a tonnage without a wastage allowance built in, add it before you order.
Quality verification is not optional and it is not rude. It is the professional standard that separates experienced buyers from those who learn their lessons expensively. The following five-point check takes less than 15 minutes and protects you completely. Do it for every single delivery, regardless of how long you have worked with a supplier.
Before offloading is complete, count all bars received. Compare against the standard bars-per-ton figure for your size. A surplus significantly above standard is an immediate red flag for under-gauge supply.
Measure 6–10 bars from different bundles. Every bar must be 12 metres. Even 15–20cm short per bar represents a significant steel loss across a large order — steel you paid for but did not receive.
The most conclusive test. Weigh 4–6 bars from different bundles. Compare against the standard weight for the size. A consistent shortfall confirms under-gauge supply and is grounds for rejection before signing.
Full-gauge TMT rods have uniform, well-defined ribs running at a consistent angle along the full bar length. Shallow, irregular or inconsistent ribs indicate poor-quality or under-gauge manufacturing.
Every bundle from a legitimate manufacturer has tags showing brand, size, grade and batch number. Request the test certificate for large orders. Missing or taminated tags are warning signs. Never sign before completing all five checks.
Weigh it. Measure it. Count it. That is the Raloyd standard. We supply full-gauge, standard 12-metre rods and welcome on-site verification because we have nothing to hide. Test certificates available on request.
Lagos has hundreds of iron rod sellers. The difference between a reliable construction supply partner and one who will cost you money is not always obvious at first contact. Here is how to evaluate any supplier before your first order.
TMT rod prices in Lagos are not fixed. They move in response to global steel markets, the naira exchange rate, port logistics and seasonal construction demand. Understanding what drives prices helps you buy at the right moment and avoid paying peak rates unnecessarily.
Dry season construction acceleration (Oct–Mar), naira depreciation, port congestion or delays, major infrastructure announcements, global steel price increases driven by production cuts.
Rainy season demand slowdown, naira strengthening, increased global steel supply, large Chinese export volumes, seasonal Lagos construction lulls.
"The price you pay for iron rods in Lagos is partly about the market rate. But it is also about the quantity you commit to, the supplier relationship you have built, and whether you are buying at the right point in the demand cycle."
Prices are updated weekly. As of :
